The apparatus has a rotary torch and the workpiece remains stationary; it is used where the workpiece cannot be rotated. When the intersection of two parts is to be welded, the torch, guided by the intersection copy assembly, welds circumferentially along the weld intersection. In angular positioning of the rotary torch, the counter tailstock always stays in line with the centre of rotation. There is a pneumatic centring element. Torch positioning uses 3 axis and angular adjustment slides. Torch rotation is provided by an AC motor and reducer, and its speed is adjusted steplessly with the AC motor driver. The weld end overlap amount can be adjusted.
